Fitzwilliam, New Hampshire is a classic New England scenic community with a village green framed by a meetinghouse, historic houses, several antique shops, a 1796 inn and an architecturally outstanding 1817 town hall. The town was called Monadnock No. 4 or Stoddardtown when it was granted in 1752. The town was named for William, fourth Earl of Fitzwilliam and cousin to Governor Wentworth.
An early grantee in Fitzwilliam was Matthew Thornton, signer of the Declaration of Independence. Brigadier Gen. James Reed (1722-1807), veteran of the French and Indian Wars and one of only three Revolutionary War generals from New Hampshire, settled here in about 1765 as an original proprietor.
After the railroad opened in 1849, an important granite industry developed and flourished for some years in Fitzwilliam. Today, the town is a resort and retirement community with many beautiful colonial homes and small woodworking operations contribute to the economy. Its Rhododendron Reservation and State Park and Laurel Lake are outstanding features.

The State has a population of just over 1.3 million people. The state's population has just about doubled since 1960.
Government:
New Hampshire's state capitol is Concord, situated along the Merrimack River in the south central region of the state. The state government has three branches; Executive, Legislative and Judicial, headed by a State Supreme Court.
Taxes:
Many people are drawn to New Hampshire for the lack of a state income tax and the lack of a sales tax. There is a tax on unearned income over a certain amount every year, and there is a property tax.
Liquor:
A great deal of revenue is obtained through sales from state-owned liquor stores. You must be 21 years of age to legally purchase or consume any alcoholic beverages.
Education:
Local school boards administrate school districts in the State. These boards have authority to make all rules and regulations of the government, organization and grading in the district.
